Green light for new facility: Schlegel expands its production capacity

Investing in the site’s future – largest construction project in the company’s history

The electrical engineering company Georg Schlegel is planning for the future by expanding its site in Dürmentingen. The company is investing millions in a new building, thereby marking the largest construction project in its history. “This new building clearly demonstrates our commitment to the Dürmentingen site and to the future of ‘Made in Germany’ production,” emphasise the managing directors Christoph Schlegel, Wolfgang Weber and Eberhard Schlegel.

The company acquired the neighbouring plot of land in 2023. Planning for the project has been underway since 2024. However, stable economic conditions were essential. Now that the order book has stabilised significantly, the decision has been made to start construction.

With this new building, the electrical engineering company, which employs around 250 people, is primarily addressing a growing shortage of space. The existing buildings are now operating at full capacity, with numerous departments working under cramped conditions. The new building will provide an additional 2,800 square metres of floor space. This will increase the company’s available space by almost 50 per cent, from around 5,700 square metres to approximately 8,500 square metres. This will create the physical conditions needed for further growth and future developments.

Automation as a key factor

The main focus here is on automation. It is considered crucial to securing the site’s long-term competitiveness. “Automation is key to ensuring long-term production success,” the managing directors emphasise. The aim is to strengthen production in Dürmentingen sustainably and lay the foundations for further growth. At its Dürmentingen site, Schlegel develops and manufactures electrical engineering components for controlling machines and systems used worldwide.

In addition to extra production and office space, the company also plans to invest in a sustainable energy supply. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof to generate part of the site’s electricity demand. Due to rising energy demand, a new transformer station will be built next to the existing facility.

The architecture of the new building is based on the 2014 extension. The plans include a mirror image of the building on the opposite side of the main building to create a harmonious overall appearance. For the management, this design also symbolises the company's steady growth from its core over the decades. The company is collaborating with the architectural office JKLM from Biberach on the new building, which was also responsible for planning the 2014 extension.

Construction to begin in late summer

According to the current plans, construction work is scheduled to start in August or September. Fritschle, a company that also carried out the 2014 extension, has been commissioned to carry out the structural work. The structural work is scheduled for completion in spring 2027, with the new building due to come into operation in autumn 2028.

For the management, the project is far more than just a physical expansion. “By giving the green light, we are launching the most significant construction project in our company’s history. We are confident that this investment will set us on the right course for a successful future.”
